we are approaching the end of the blank spot
For most of history the map had edges.
Not metaphorically. Actual maps, with actual blank regions where nobody had been. Then people went, and the blanks closed. Telescopes closed the ones overhead. Microscopes closed the ones underneath.
We usually tell this as a story about knowledge. I think it is better told as a story about sensing. Every one of those instruments did the same job. It moved some part of reality from invisible to observable.
The blanks on the map are gone. The blank spots are not.
We still do not know what is happening inside most machines. Not "cannot predict." Do not know. A pump in a plant somewhere is failing right now, and the first anyone hears of it will be when it stops.
We do not know the state of most crops, field by field.
We do not know where most things in a supply chain physically are, only where a document claims they should be.
Most bridges and transformers report nothing about themselves. We inspect them on a schedule, which is a polite way of saying we guess.
An enormous share of the economy is still observed by a person filling out a form. Someone walks around, looks at things, types what they saw into a box. That is the sensor. That has been the sensor for a century.
The popular story about AI is that machines are getting smarter. The more interesting development is that machines are about to have far more to look at.
Intelligence without input is just an opinion. Put a brilliant model in a room with no windows and it produces confident nonsense, because the constraint was never the reasoning. It was the data, and upstream of the data, the sensing.
Here is the part I keep turning over.
Observability is not a neutral change. It starts a sequence.
Once something is observable it becomes measurable. Once measurable, someone optimizes it. Once optimized, someone builds a market on top of it.
Shipping containers were untracked, then they were tracked, and freight became a commodity with a live price. Driving was unobserved, then telematics arrived, and insurance repriced itself around how you actually drive rather than who you resemble on paper.
The sensor comes first and the market follows. Which markets are waiting on which sensors is not obvious in advance. That is most of what makes it worth paying attention to.
If that holds, the frontier is not the model. It is the edge of the visible.
Whoever puts eyes on a part of the world nobody currently watches gets to decide what counts as good there. Measurement precedes optimization, and whoever measures first picks the metric everyone else then optimizes against.
That is a strange amount of power for something that looks, at the time, like bolting a cheap sensor onto an unglamorous machine.
I do not think every blank spot closes. Some of them are people, and we should probably leave those alone.
But the physical world is going to become legible in a way it never has been, and sooner than most people expect. Most of the interesting work of the next decade lives in the gap between what exists and what anyone can currently see.
